GL Computing

About us.

We’ve been working with and fixing computers for about 20 years, and we’re always trying out new developments to see how they work, - or even if they work at all.

Here’s some case studies of what we’ve done in the past....

(We’ll be using some techno-speak in these, if you don't understand the terms have a look at the Plain Speech page for explanations).

Case 1

A couple had an ageing computer that ran very slowly and kept freezing on them. They had 2 children who wanted to use the computer for their homework, so they decided they needed to update what they had. We looked at their current set-up and offered them the options of either upgrading their current computer, or buying a new computer in component form and we'd put all the bits together for them. They decided to buy the new computer, so we advised them which bits to go for, went with them to the shop to translate any techo-speak the shop came up with, and then built the new computer for them.

Case 2

An educational consultant working from home wanted to have the ability to do her work on her laptop anywhere in her house, while still able to use the internet and print. We investigated the various hardware required to enable wireless internet connection and wireless printing, and then bought and installed the hardware for her, also installing antivirus software and a firewall. Later on she moved house and changed the way she connected to the internet, so we advised her on getting an internet domain name so that if she moves again, she'll always have the same e-mail address and web pages no matter who provides her internet access. We then helped her with configuring her e-mail so that if anyone e-mailed her domain e-mail address, the e-mail would end up either at her home computer(s) or on her Blackberry.

Case 3

Imagine a family with 3 children, all using the computer to access the internet, looking at who knows what. They asked us to have a look at the computer as it was very slow and they were getting lots of pop-ups all the time. We ran a virus and spyware check and cleaned off about 200 virus's, trojans, spyware etc., so we installed some antivirus software and a firewall and ran them through what they were. At the same time we made a complete backup of their computer just in case. This happened to be very useful, when 5 months later the hard drive in their computer decided to fail. we restored the backup and returned their computer back to life.
